Cyclone 'Remal' to hit West Bengal by May 26

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding the formation of cyclone 'Remal' over the east central Bay of Bengal by May 25 morning. The low-pressure area currently situated over southwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal is anticipated to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, with winds ranging from 100 to 120 kmph, by May 26 evening.

According to climate scientist Roxy Mathew Koll from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, the cyclone's development is attributed to persistently high sea surface temperatures, which have been 2–3°C warmer than usual in the south Bay of Bengal. Koll highlighted the influence of the Madden Julian Oscillation and warm ocean waters, emphasizing the rotational trigger provided by winds for cyclone formation. However, the progression of the monsoon may influence the cyclone's development, potentially resulting in either a monsoon depression or a weak cyclone of short duration.
